January Match Report

2012 is off to a great start with 18 registered shooters in our first match of the year. The weather was just about perfect.  Cool enough to put on the coffee pot in the morning but warm enough to leave the long johns at home.

Jay and I re-worked the target frames and had them looking good.
Thanks to Bob Brown who built us some new benches for pasting the high shots.

Congratulations to Scott who showed us all up once again.   Click Here for the scores.
(One shooter did not turn in a score card, and one left early.)

Welcome to Troy, Jason, and Matt who came out to shoot with us today.

As always,  thanks to everyone for helping out.  Your participation keeps it fun for everyone.

Interesting Information on the M1 Garand

Here are links to download a couple of files I recently found that I thought might be of interest to M1 Garand shooters.  Both are very old, but have good solid information.  After opening, please save them to your computer for reference.  The first file is fairly small but the second is big, so be prepared to wait if you have a slow connection.   I found both of these online and hope that they are public domain.  If I find out differently,  I'll have to take them off.

December Match Report

The weather was most agreeable even if a little gusty now and again.  We had a good turnout as it seems to happen often near the holidays.  I'm glad so many of you chose to spend some of your downtime with us.  Jay and Scott took the top spot in the matches this month, congratulations to you both.  Click Here for Scores.

Welcome to Stephen, Jack, Ken, and Mark who joined us for the matches.
We hope you'll make it a regular thing.

Thanks to all for pitching in not only this match, but all year long.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR

September Match Report

We got off to a damp start, but soon enough the rain passed over and we had a great day to shoot.  Nice and cool was a welcome change from the summer heat.  Eleven shooters came out to the range and we all had a great time.  Congratulations to Scott and Jay for winning the matches.  Scores are posted, Click Here.
Welcome to John Babiarz who shot with us for the first time.  We all hope you had a good time and will come back.

Thanks to everyone for helping out with setup and takedown.

August Match Cancelled due to weather !!!

It looks like we're in for some wind and rain at the least.
Everyone stay home and protect your families and property.  We'll see you next month.

July Match Report

It was hot !!!  But, with plenty of water, a few fans,  and the shade of the covered shooting positions, we beat the heat.  Apparently, the heat has a positive effect on some folks.   Congratulations to Fran and Jay, our match winners today.  Fran set a new high score for our matches in the standing position.  Fran's standing score of 94-1X is likely to stand for quite awhile.  Click here for Scores.

Bill fired an Arisaka Type 99 short rifle.  The Type 99 was a WWII Japanese rifle.  This particular one was probably mid-war production.  It still has the adjustable rear sight, but otherwise resembles the "last-ditch" versions.  Click the picture for more info..

Arisaka Type 99

Thanks to everyone for pitching in at this particularly hot match.

June Match Report

This match was a lot of fun.  We stepped outside of our usual box and changed up the matches a bit.  The first match was business as usual.  But, on the second match we used a B27 Full sized torso silhouette target.  The all black B27 was quite a challenge and the scores reflect it.  Click here for the scores.  After the second match we had an optional "Mad Minute" match.  We divided shooters into two categories, bolt-action and semi-autos.  Then, with magazines loaded, we had sixty seconds to put as many aimed shots down range at the B27s as we could from the prone position.  Rounds fired count ranged from 9 to 52.   The bolt-action high scorer was Scott McMillan who scored a 99 with 13 rounds fired from his M1903A3.  The semi-auto high score was fired by two shooters.  Jim Popp and Tom Powell each scored an identical 206-2X.  But, Jim fired 52 rounds from his M1 Carbine, while Tom fired 24 rounds from his M1 Garand.

Welcome to Lee, Brad, and Drew who shot with us for the first time today.
We hope you won't be disappointed if we go back to our usual double header match next month.

Thanks to everyone for helping out.  Thanks to Jim for the B27 idea and to Scott for the "Mad Minute" idea.

May Match Report

They say if you don't like the weather, wait a minute...  We had to do a bit of waiting as rain hit us at the end of the first match.  It passed quickly though and after a fresh target was posted, we fired match #2.  We had 12 shooters altogether, even though several had to leave before the second match.  Congratulations to Scott for winning both matches.  Click Here for scores.

Welcome To Bob and Mike shooting with us for the first time today.  And welcome back to Bobby.  We hope you guys had a great time and will come back often.

Thanks as always to everyone for helping out, making the match run smoothly.

A great day for shooting.  Even though most of us set up under cover in case of rain,  the wet stuff held off until the match was over.  Congratulations to Scott who won both matches today.  Scores are posted, CLICK Here.

Welcome to Charles Futrell who drove down to shoot with us for the first time today.

Thanks everyone for helping out.  You guys are great.  I never think twice about getting things done.

February Match Report

If you stayed home,  you missed a good chance to shoot.  A little windy for a minute here or there,  but otherwise,  nice weather.  We had nine shooters today.  Two shooters,  Tim and Paul,  tried out the bench option.  It worked well.  We may adjust the third stage of bench to a sitting upright position, comments welcome.  Scores are posted click here.  Congratulations to Bill and Jay,  the match winners of the day.

Thanks to everyone for helping with the match chores..

January Match Report

OK, we're off to a whole new year of good shooting.  8 brave souls put on their long-johns and shot today.  Our new coffee pot was certainly put to good use.  Thanks to the anonymous donor, whoever you are.  Congratulations to Jim Popp who won the first match and to Scott for winning the second.  Scores are posted.  We did not have any bench shooters today, but Joe Kester came out to test our bench setup.  We have two benches that are extra tall and do not have fixed seats.  Joe likes the setup and will be getting his gear together.

Thanks everyone for the extra help as I was somewhat limited with a bum wing.

January Match Planning

We will shoot a Vintage Military Rifle Double Header. We will also begin adding a bench-rest match for shooters who have difficulty shooting from standard positions.  Click Here for the bench-rest info.

We also have a new coffee pot.  Thanks to an anonymous donation, we have purchased a coffee pot and water coolers.  I have coffee, powdered creamer, and sugar.  Anything else you want, bring your own.

November Match Report

Well, that's a wrap for 2010!  No match in December due to our Saturday being Christmas day.  2010 was a good year for our Vintage matches.  Today we fired our usual Vintage Military Double Header.  Great weather, and good shooting.  Congratulations to Tom Powell for setting a new high target score for our matches.  Tom fired a 100-8X rapid fire sitting.  Scott McMillan shot the high match scores in both matches (although he only squeaked past by one X in match #1.)  Good shooting Scott.  Scores are posted Click Here.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the matches this year by participating and by pitching in with all of the match chores.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year...We'll see you in January.

September Match Report

OK everyone, the cool fall days are just ahead.  The September match started at a cool 68 degrees, but found its way up to the low 90's by the end.  The sky was bright and the wind was light.  A great day for shooting.  Scott edged out Randall (Welcome back) in the first match by 3 points.  And I got the second match with an easy 10 point margin.  Click Here for Scores.

Thanks everyone for helping out...

August Match Report

It was another hot one.  11 shooters made the matches.  Our friends from out east took both matches today.  Congratulations to Scott and David.  Scores are posted click here.   Welcome to Tom Buhls who fired the matches with us today.  Hope you had a good time and will come back next month.

Looking forward to those cool fall matches!!!

Thanks to everyone for pitching in and making the match run smooth.

July Match Report

Another scorcher.  8 brave souls showed up and fired the match.    Hydration was the key to shooting well today.  Scott won the first match with a very respectable 282-7X and I squeaked out the second one with the Swede.  Click Here for Scores.  Jim brought another interesting rifle to shoot today.  Pictured below is a 1905 Ross straight pull Canadian rifle similar to Jims.  It is a WWI rifle chambered in .303.  Only 420,000 were made.

Thanks everyone for helping run the match.

June Match Report

It's not the heat, it's the humidity.  No,  it was both!!!  We were definitely huddling around the fans today.  In spite of the heat though, we had a good day for a match.  Both Scott and David fired single shot rifles and put up some good scores.   Scores are posted. Click here.
We got video of Scott shooting a single shot rifle in the first match.  Click here to see the video.

Thanks everyone for pitching in with the setup and takedown.  Hope to see you all next month.

May Match Report

All but one of us set up under the cover and started watching the sky, but all it did was get brighter.  It turned out to be a great day for shooting.  If you stayed home you missed out.   Congratulations to Scott for winning the first match.  Don and David shot the same score in the second match except for X's.  But, Don's M1 wasn't "as issued" and he declined the honors making David the second match winner.  Scores are posted.  Click Here

Thanks to everyone for helping with setup, takedown, scoring, etc.
Hope to see you in June!  We should have new pasters by then.

It was a little windy today,  but it's March.  Sun was up nice and bright though and the shooting was good.  Congratulations to Jay who shot an excellent score the first match, winning with a 273-1X.
Don Watford shot a 95-3X Rapid Fire Sitting with an ...SKS (at 200yds !!!)  Scores are posted.  Click here.

Jim Hawkins shot with us today for the first time.  Hope you enjoyed it and will come back.

February Match Report

We had another great day for a match.  Weather was bright and sunny and not too cold.  You have really been missing out if you stayed home.  Almost perfect conditions.  Congratulations to Scott on winning the first match with an M1.  I had a great day with my M1 and took the second match.

We had several new shooters with us today.  Welcome to all, I hope you'll come back to shoot with us again.

As always thanks to everyone for pitching in with setup and takedown.

Thanks to Jim Popp who was the Match Director for the day's matches.  Scores are posted.  Click here.

January Match Report

We had a great start for 2010 today.  Weather was bright and sunny and not too cold.  Congratulations to Jay on winning the first match.  I had my trusty K31 and took the second match.  All in all, a great day at the range.  Scores are posted.  Click here.  David Schneider played shutterbug again so there are new pictures.  Thanks David. We will fire our usual VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.   Click Here for Match Information, Times, fees, etc.  Make a resolution to shoot more VM matches!!!

The club has purchased CMP 30-06 ammo for use in the VM matches.  It is Greek HXP and is packed in 8 round enbloc clips.  The price is still the same.  $7.50 per 20 rounds, or more conveniently, $3.00 per clip.  Limit 80 rounds per match.

December Match Report

That's a wrap for 2009.  We had over a hundred match entries this year,  met some new folks, and had a lot of fun making noise with some fine old rifles.  I'm looking forward to doing it all again in 2010.  Hopefully, our ammo will hold out and reloading supplies will come back to the shelves.

For the December match, our friends from out East put the hurt on us pretty good.  Congratulations to Dave and Scott each winning one of the matches.  Click here for the scores.

Welcome to Larry and Tim, both CCRPC members shooting with us for the first time.

Although I may sound like a broken record, I really do appreciate the help everyone gives in setting up, taking down, and scoring.  Thanks to Jay for keeping the range in such fine shape.  Thanks to Jim for taking over when I can't make it.  You guys really make running these matches a pleasure.

December Match Planning

This will be the Saturday right after Christmas so you're forgiven in advance if you can't make it.  Those of you who can, we will fire our usual Vintage Military Double Header.  So, bring out your new toys and lets see how they do.  Hope to see you there.

November Match Report

We had a great turnout for the match.  I never know for sure what to do during the holidays.  We had a bright and sunny, if somewhat cool day.  It warmed up nicely though and was a good day for a match.  Scott won in the first match with a comfortable lead and I edged out David in the second match.  I might add that I had to shoot under slight duress with scattered comments about the pinkness of shooting a carbine.

Joining us for the first time this month were Hank, Don, and John.  Welcome to you all, I hope you had a good time and will come out and shoot with us again.

Thanks to everyone for setting up and taking down target frames, etc.  Thanks to Miles McMillan for constructing a first-class target backer setup.  Miles put together a tarpaper holder so we can easily slice off pieces as needed to block off target backlighting.

November Match Planning

This will be the Saturday right after Thanksgiving so you're forgiven in advance if you can't make it.  For those who can make it, and can still walk, we will fire our usual Vintage Military Double Header.  Hope to see you there.

I have CMP surplus 30-06 (Greek HXP) available to those needing 30-06 for the matches.  The cost is now $7.50 per 20 rounds limit 80 rounds per shooter.  The ammo is in 8 round M1 enbloc clips packed in bandoleers.  I apologize for the increase, I am still making no profit.  We may not see this ammo again so I'm trying to make it stretch as long as possible.

October CMP Match Report

We had a great day for the CMP matches.  No distracting weather or other excuses, it was just us and the targets.  Congratulations to Scott who posted the high score in both matches.  Scott shot a 280-4X in the first match with an M1903A3 to win a gold Springfield CMP Pin.  In the second match he shot a 275-4X with an M1 Garand to win a silver M1 Garand CMP pin.  Others receiving pins were: Fran Willis, Vintage Military-Silver;  Bill Bowling, M1 Garand-Bronze; Jay Ferguson, Springfield-Bronze, Jim Popp, Vintage Military-bronze.

Click here for the CMP non-carbine scores, and Click here for the Carbine Match scores.

We had 3 M1 Carbine shooters this match, although none earned CMP pins this time.

October Match Planning

We will shoot two official CMP matches.  Click here for details.  Be sure to bring a notarized CMP affidavit with you if you have not given us one already.  CMP award pins will be given according to the 2009 CMP Cut scores.  Participation in these matches will meet one of the requirements for purchasing rifles from the CMP.

September Match Report

What a great change for weather conditions.  Temperature was great and although rain was predicted, we only had to walk through some wet grass from earlier sprinkles.  The sky was overcast and it told on some of our older eyes.  That rear sight is a little harder to get in focus in dimmer conditions.  The scores kind of showed that.  Scott shot a great score with his M1903A3 (aperture sight) and won the first match with a 281-5X to win the remainder of the Lake City 30-06 ammo.  Thanks again to Joe Kester, a CCRPC member, for the donation.   Scores are posted.

Welcome to Paul and Fran who shot with us for the first time.  Thanks to everyone for helping out with setup and takedown.  Thanks to Jay for having the range looking so good.

September Match Planning

We will fire our usual Vintage Military Double Header.  Because we were partly rained out in August, we will still have the Lake City 30-06 ammo available for prizes.

August Match Report

Hey!  I said a "LITTLE" wet we could stand.  What we got was a mini-monsoon.  After sweating through the first match, we watched a really dark sky approach rapidly.  Along with the first shots of the second match came the first rain drops.  Before we could finish the slow-fire, those of us out in the open were completely soaked.  So, with the targets drenched, we scrubbed the second match.

Welcome to Dave Cochron and Miles McMillan shooting with us for the first time.  Dave didn't get to shoot much as he was only planning to shoot the second match.

Have a look at Jim's Hungarian 43M.  Only 91,500 made.  Check this website for more info.   Scroll down about half-way to the 43M.
Weapons of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

August Match Planning

We will fire our usual Vintage Military Double Header.  The weather forecast is cooler than we've had lately, but we may see some rain.  With the covered firing points we can stand a little wet, so come on out.

July Match Report

It was another hot one.  We ran a couple of fans to get some breeze.  We collectively decided to go ahead and shoot the regular Double Header match as usual.  Due to a computer glitch, I don't have the scores ready to post, but I'll get it done soon.

Welcome to Glenn Collins, hope you will come back again.

July Match Planning

Because of the heat, we will fire one 30 round Vintage Match followed by some novelty targets.  As soon as we get it planned, I'll update everyone, so you'll know how to prepare.  Stay tuned ....

June Match Report

It was a hot one for sure.  Most shooters fired from under the cover in the shade.  Yours truly shot my best score ever winning the first match.  In the second match Scott fired his trapdoor Springfield, firing off his last rapid fire round in between "Cease" and "Fire."  Next time he shoots a single shot, I'm going get video of the rapid fire string.

Thanks to everyone for braving the heat and coming out to shoot.  Also thanks for help with setup and take-down.  I really appreciate everyone pitching in.

CMP Games Report

Tom Powell and I went to shoot at the CMP Games this year at Camp Butner.  Tom has been there a few times already and so I was the rookie.  Tom brought me up to speed quickly though and I had a great time.  I just wish I had brought more rifles.  I fired my k31 in three matches, trying to shoot well enough to pick up a gold medal.   Well, maybe next year.  Tom shot his M1 and his M1 carbine and collected medals with both.  I posted a link to the CMP Games Scores on the Calendar and Results page.

We watched the Rimfire Sporter rifle match and have decided that we will want to shoot that next year for sure.  Rimfire Sporter is a fun match where everyday (well almost) .22 rifles are used with or without scopes to fire 6 targets:  Slow Fire and Rapid Fire in 3 positions.  The prone targets are at 50 yds and the Sitting and Standing targets are at 25 yds.  The shooters were having a blast.  The allowed equipment is kept fairly simple and the rifles have a 7.5 lb weight limit as well as a few other equalizing rules.

Click here to check it out Rimfire Sporter match info on the CMP Website.

May Match Report

Another great day for a match.  Summertime is fast approaching and we'll probably shoot from under the cover for a few matches to beat the heat.  Congratulations to Scott who took first place in both matches.  You may notice though that his lead isn't as great as it has been.  Jim and I placed a pretty tight 2nd and 3rd in the first match.

Thanks, as always to everyone for helping with the matches.

New Pics Posted from April CMP Match.  Check them out in the gallery.
Thanks to David Schneider for providing the pictures.

April Match Report

Another great day for a match.  It got a little warm out in the sun, but there was a little breeze that felt great on the walk from the firing line to the targets and back.  Congratulations to David and Scott who won the first and second matches, each picking up Silver Springfield CMP award pins.  Bill came in second in each match, picking up Silver Vintage Military pins for each.  Tom took third in both matches, earning two bronze M1 Garand award pins.  Placing fourth,  Jay collected a Bronze Springfield pin for the first match and David collected a Bronze Vintage Military pin for the second match.

Thanks everyone for pitching in and making the match fun for all.

April Match Planned

The April match will be a CMP double header.  Two 300 pt matches following the CMP  JC_Garand_course_A.
We will register the match with CMP for official records and shoot CMP rules.
Click here for the CMP Rules.

CMP award pins will be given to competitors according to the 2009 CMP cut scores.  Click here for cut scores.

March Match Report

Spring has finally sprung.   Weather was great.  Started out a little foggy but burned off quickly.  We all enjoyed shooting out in the open on the grass.  Congratulations to Scott who took both matches.  I'd have gotten him on the second match, but a big fat 0 on one shot of my standing score put that possibility to rest.

Thanks to Scott for the New PICS...Click Here ,
As always, thanks to everyone for helping with setup and takedown.

Welcome to Jason Brown, shooting with us for the first time.
Hope you enjoyed it and will come back next time.

March Match Planned

The March Match will be a  VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  I still have a supply of CMP 30-06 surplus ammo for sale to those who shoot the match.  The price has gone up slightly, but I'm still selling it near my cost.  New price will be 5.50 per box of 20 rounds, limit 4 boxes.

February Match Report

The covered firing line really saved this match.  We had light rain and I wondered if we would have many shooters.  But, rain or no rain, the shooters pulled in and we had a good match.  Congratulations to Scott who took the first match with his M96 Swede with a 273-6X.  Congratulations to Dave who fired a 99 in the slow fire prone stage with his 03A3 winning the second match with a 277-7X.

February Match Planned

The February Match will be a  VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  I've been traveling so I haven't been keeping up with normal communications, but the match is on.  ALSO, I now have a supply of CMP 30-06 surplus ammo for sale to those who shoot the match.  The price has gone up slightly, but I'm still selling it near my cost.  New price will be 5.50 per box of 20 rounds, limit 4 boxes.

January Match Report

I had to miss this one.  Thanks to Jim Popp for running the match.  Weather was not great but 6 hardy souls made the match.  Scores are posted.    Congratulations to Wes for taking the first match with his Mosin Nagant M1891/30.  That's what I love about VM shooting.  It's not about how much a rifle costs, but how well you can shoot it.  Congrats to Scott on the second match where he got his M1917 dialed in a little tighter. Thanks to all who came out to shoot and pitched in with setup and takedown.

January Match Planned

The January Match will be a  VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  I have put up the tentative 2009 schedule as a repeat of the 2008 schedule.  If you want to see more CMP matches or have other suggestions please email me at vmshooters@crossecreekrifleandpistolclub.com and we will consider all ideas.

December Match Report

The fog was fairly thick as we fired our sighters, but it cleared away before things got too serious and we had a great day to shoot.  Thanks to all who came out to shoot and pitched in with setup and takedown.

"YOU Suck!"  is a frequent, good natured ribbing several of us usually get from Jim when we edge him out by a point or two.  Well today was payback as we all got to tell Jim how much he "sucked" as he put the hurt on all of us in the first match.

Congratulations to Jim and also to Scott who won the second match with a very nice M42B Ljungman.

Welcome to Glenn Collins and Mark Scott who shot the match with us this month.

December Match Planned

The December Match will be a  VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.

I have a mystery donation from Cheaper Than Dirt to offer as a prize.  So dig yourself out of the ribbons and bows and come out to shoot the matches with us!

November Match Report

Thanks to Jim Popp for running this match.  I had to miss it for a work related trip.  I heard that all went well so look for Jim again in the near future when once again I'm forced to choose between feeding my family and shooting a match.  There was a really great showing of foreign military rifles at this match  Out of the seven shooters there were 6 foreign countries represented.  Check it out, results are posted.  Congrats to Scott and David, the two match winners for November.

Welcome to Madison Garner who shot the match with us this month.

October CMP Match Report

Dodged the rain mostly and had a nice cool day for a match.  Our CMP double header went off without a hitch.  Congratulations to our CMP award pin winners:  Scott McMillan collected an M1 Garand Gold pin and a Springfield Silver pin.  Tom Powell picked up an M1 Garand Bronze pin.  Joe Fescina earned a Springfield Bronze pin.  Jim Popp earned a Springfield Bronze pin and a Vintage Military Bronze pin.  Lastly, Bill Bowling brought home a Vintage Military Silver pin. Another great day for a match.  A little glimpse of fall weather was enjoyed by all.  Congratulations to Scott and Joe, our winners for today's matches.  Both Scott and Joe shot their best scores of the year here for CCRPC matches.  Several other shooters also posted their best or near best CCRPC scores today.

Welcome to Richard Ogden, hope you can make it back and shoot another match soon.

September Match Planned

The September Match will be a  VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.

I'm planning another CMP double header for October,  comments welcome as always.

August Match Report

OK, so we apparently can't compete with the Greensboro Gunshow.  Nevertheless, the match must go on!  We had a beautiful day for a match.  Having the target frames near the 200yd line really simplified setup, and shooting off the new concrete is a nice option.  Tom Powell and I took the matches, but Jim Popp was hot on our heels.

Welcome to Wes Starling, one of Bary's friends.  Hope you had fun and can make it next time.

August Match Planned

The August Match will be another  VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  I've been real busy lately and haven't had time to work up anything else.  Besides, the double-header really is our favorite.  We should have the target frame shed completed so that the frames will be stored near the 200yd line.  This will simplify setup and takedown.  We will also have the 100yd fixed frame removable so that the covered firing positions will be more usable.  And, if I can get some time, I will have a new 100yd target frame ready for use by carbine shooters.

July Match Report

Congratulations to David Schneider and Randall Harris, winners of the two matches.  What a nice change in the weather.  While it was still warm, it wasn't sweltering.  We also have the concrete finished under the roof, and now can shoot in the shade.  This match , though it seems,  was beset with gremlins.  We had sights slipping down, bullets failing to feed from magazines, oversized rounds that wouldn't chamber,  op-rods coming loose.  Nevertheless, we had a good time, and that's what it is all about.

Welcome to new shooters Bary Winslow and Bryan Anderson.  Hope you had fun and will come shoot with us again.

We had two interesting rifles this match.  Jim Popp brought an Egyptian Hakim 8mm, and Scott McMillan brought another single shot.  This time a Martini-Enfield, chambered in .303.  Pics are below.  As always, thanks to everyone for helping with setup and take-down.

Martini-Enfield Mk II

July Match Planned

The July Match will be a "Cool and Shady" VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  We are working hard to reconfigure the range to allow us to shoot from under the cover.  We may not get too many more really hot days this year, but we will likely see some more wet ones.  Having the roof over the firing line will help with both.  Plans have been made to pour concrete into the unpaved half of the covered area and to rearrange the target line to shift target frames to the left.  We should be done with this work BEFORE the July match.

Thanks to Jay Ferguson and Rick Smith for acting quickly on this.

June Match Report

OK, this was a hot one!  Everybody was feeling the heat.  Not just the heat of competition either.  Although, with our best prize offering yet, there was some of that too.  I thought I had a good chance with my British .303.  Then I found out I should have practiced offhand with it.  I guess the British learned their lesson about standing up in the open to fight during our Revolutionary war.  It seems their rifles don't like to shoot offhand.  Obviously there was just a loose nut behind the trigger.  Congratulations to Scott McMillan who took first prize, the Creedmoor Sports shooting mat.  Joe and Moira Fescina showed us another of their rifles.  Moira shot a MAS 49/56 like this one in the first match.  One of these matches, she's going to find one she really likes and then "show and tell" will be a lot less interesting.

Scores are posted, Click Here for Results.   Welcome to new shooter Keith McCahan.  We hope you had fun and will come shoot with us again.   Many thanks to all who pitched in with setup and takedown.  Thanks to Ed Jones for helping cut grass on the berms on short notice.

June Match Planned

The June Match will be another VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  What can I say, they're our favorite matches.  Creedmoor Sports has donated a shooting mat which we will award to the shooter with the highest score of the day.  If you who do business with Creedmoor Sports, be sure to let them know we appreciate their donation.  Those of you who don't, check out www.creedmoorsports.com  for the best in high power shooting.

May Match Report

We managed to beat the rain and had a good match after all.  We were moving benches to make room under the shelter when the rain let up.  So some of us braved the weather and shot in the open while a few more cautious shooters stayed under the cover.  The rain was light though and didn't soak anybody.  Joe and Moira Fescina showed us an interesting rifle.  Moira shot a Madsen like this one in the first match.

Scores are posted, Click Here for Results.   Welcome to new shooters Matt Bowling and John Masters.  We hope you had fun and will come shoot with us again.   Many thanks to all who pitched in with setup and takedown.

May Match Planned

The May Match will be a VMBAR/VMSAR Double Header.  The two match winners will each get a pair of binoculars from Graf and Sons.  Those of you who do business with Graf and Sons, be sure to let them know we appreciate their donation.  Those of you who don't, check out www.Grafs.com for a good source of reloading and shooting supplies.

April Match Report

The CMP double header went off without a hitch.  We fired two JC Garand Course A 300 point matches.  We did lose one shooter for the second match, and another had a reload snafu.  But, we all got to do the CMP match with its shorter times etc, good practice for the Eastern CMP games at Camp Butner.

CMP Award pins were won by the following shooters:

In the first match:

    Scott McMillan 270-3X (M1 Silver)
    Randall Harris 267-3X (M1 Bronze)
    Tom Powell 257-3X (M1 Bronze)
    Bill Bowling 256-3X (VM Bronze)

In the second match:

    Randall Harris 272-5X (Springfield Silver)
    Scott McMillan 270-2x (Springfield Silver)
    Dave Schneider 263-1x (VM Bronze)

April Match Planned

The April match will be a CMP double header.  Two 300 pt matches following the CMP  JC_Garand_course_A.
We will register the match with CMP for official records and shoot CMP rules.
Click here for the CMP Rules.

NOTE:  To participate in CMP matches we must have on file a notarized CMP affidavit.  Click here for more information.  If you have previously given us one of these affidavits, you don't need another.

CMP award pins will be given to competitors according to the CMP cut scores. Click here for cut scores.

We are planning an informal CMP clinic for anyone who wants to get an introduction to CMP matches.  I'll send out an email with date, time and other details.  We'll cover the differences in the rules we normally use vs the CMP rules.  We'll cover sling use, shooting positions and general competitive shooting topics.

March Match Report

What a great day for a match!  We had almost a full firing line.  Pretty soon we may have to take reservations.  We shot the 500 pt course of fire.  Scott McMillan took the $25.00 Midway USA prize.  Congratulations to Scott.  Jim Popp showed us another interesting rifle this month.  Click here to check it out.  Welcome to new shooters Murray and David West.  We hope you had fun and will come shoot with us again.   Many thanks to all who pitched in with setup and takedown.

March Match Planned

The March Match will be a 500 pt Vintage match.  The match winner will get a $25.00 gift certificate from MidwayUSA.  Those of you who do business with Midway, be sure to let them know we appreciate their donation.  Those of you who don't, check out www.midwayusa.com for pretty much anything you need for shooting.

February Match Report

The Double Header match was even better the second time around.  I think we're on to something!   Scott McMillan took the first match with his M1 and declining the customary prize, passed it on to newcomer Randall Harris who was nipping pretty close at Scott's heels.    Tom Powell took the second match, also with an M1.  Tom's winning second match score was the high score of the day.  Jim Popp and Scott McMillan had the most interesting rifles of the day.  Jim proved that any shortcoming on the part of the French army wasn't due to the rifle's ability.  Welcome to new shooters Pat Parker, Randall Harris, and Sam Richard.  Thanks to all for pitching in, this job is easy because of the help.

February Match Planned

The "Double Header" was so much fun, it could be habit-forming.  Some of our regular shooters missed out on the first one.  Let's do it again.  Two 30 round matches back to back.  Get some ammo together and we'll see you in a couple of weeks!

January Match Report

The Double Header match was a great idea.  Thanks to Dave Schneider for coming up with the idea and also for doing RSO duty for the second match.  Dave also donated two Lee Perfect Powder measures for prizes.  Take a look at the results page to see the interesting rifles that were on-hand this match.  Scott took the first match with his trusty 03A3, then switched to a post civil-war single-shot rifle for an extra challenge (rapid fire included).  Yours truly took the second match with the cheapest rifle I own.  Cyle Richard joined us for the first time and fired the second match with the shortest barrel we've ever had in a match.  Thanks to all for pitching in with the chores and to Ed for the extra help and the goodies.

January Match Planned

The January match looks like some extra fun.  Can't make up your mind what you want to shoot?  We have the answer.  Thanks to a suggestion from one of our regular shooters, we are going to have a double header!  Two 30 round matches back to back.  It shouldn't take too much longer and ought to be a good time.  Go to the Calendar and Results page and click on the match description for details.

December Match Report

The December Match was a fine day to make some noise!  I was a little worried about the weather.  Forecast was for rain on Friday and Sunday.  How could we have a dry Saturday??? But, I learned my lesson and it paid off.  Congrats to Scott McMillan who won the match.  Better look over your shoulder Scott, we were hot on your heels.  Results Posted.

We also had a hand of High Power Poker after the match.  The target was printed with a full deck of cards.  The ante was $3.00 and the game was 5 card stud.  The winner took home 2/3 of the pot.  Each player took 5 shots at the target.  Scott eeked out the win with a pair of aces, jack high.  Peter was close behind with a pair of aces and a 10 high.

November Match Report

The November Match was a great time.  Started off a little chilly, you know frost on the pumpkin kind of weather.  But, by the time the shootin' started, everyone was feelin' good.  It was good to see almost everyone out for the match.    Congrats to Scott McMillan who won the match.  Results are posted.

November Match is Moved up to the 17th !!

This will be another Vintage Military Rifle Match.  I may throw in some unorthodox targets, but they'll just be for fun.
Hope to see everyone there.  Weather should be cooler...Bring a friend !

We still have CMP surplus 30-06 ammo available at $5.00 per box of 20. (Limit 4 per competitor per match)

October Match Cancelled

The weatherman threw us a curveball.  Rain for several days in a row was forecast to continue right through our match.  As with most things, plans don't always work out.  The range was plenty wet since it rained overnight, but there was no more rain after daylight.  Next time, we'll probably let the out-of-towners judge the weather reports, and we'll charge ahead anyway.

October Match is ON !!

This will be another Vintage Military Rifle Match.  I may throw in some unorthodox targets, but they'll just be for fun.

August Match Cancelled

Well, I hated to do it, but my work schedule has me out of town on the 4th Saturday of August so I have to cancel the match.  We will resume in September, so everyone practice well so we can have fun then.

July 28, 2007 Match Report

Another match in the record books.  Ok, so it was a little Hot.  Nevertheless, a good time was had by everyone.  The 90 second rapid fire strings were a nice change as was being able to start in position.  This may become standard for VMBAR/VMSAR.  After the match we tossed around some ideas for future matches.  One idea was a match consisting of three 20 round slow fire strings.  Another was a 50 yd match for M1 carbines and 7.62x39 rifles (SKS and AK47 clones or ??)  And, we are still planning something with shotguns and flying clay targets.  If you like any of these ideas, or have some ideas to contribute, I want to know.  Email me at  vmshooters@crossecreekrifleandpistolclub.com

Thanks to Rich Canfield for acting as RSO and to everyone else who helped with setup and takedown.

Welcome to new shooter Chris Woodson, not bad for shooting an unfamiliar rifle.  Hope to see you next time.

We should have some pictures from this match soon.

July 28 Match Details now available.

This will be a 500 point (50 round+sighters) VMBAR/VMSAR match.  Open the Calendar & Results link above and click on the Match Description for details.  Due to requests made and creaking knees heard, we will allow shooters to begin rapid fire stages in position.  We will also extend the rapid fire time to 90 seconds.  These changes are for VMBAR/VMSAR matches only.  If you want to keep up your regular timing, you may still start standing.

We will have CMP surplus 30-06 ammo available at $5.00 per box of 20. (Limit 4 per competitor per match)

June 23, 2007 Match Report

We had a great day for a match June 23.  Weather was great!  Several of our regular shooters were off shooting in a state match so we were missing a few.  Our top two shooters received CMP award pins for their scores.  Scott McMillan received a Silver Springfield award pin and Dave Schneider received a Silver Vintage Military award pin.

We had a new shooter join our ranks.  Tom Powell from Lumberton looks like he will definitely be a contender.  Tom put up a pretty respectable score, especially considering he was shooting an unfamiliar rifle and having to use some serious Kentucky windage!

We're still pondering a course of fire for the July match.  After discussing the matter with several shooters, we are at least sure that it will be a VMBAR/VMSAR match for all vintage rifles.  Check a little later for details.

If you aren't getting email notices from us prior to the matches, take a minute and fill out our Information Form so we can keep you in the loop.
